I was saddened to find Joel among our deceased classmates. I would have liked to reacquaint as old men. I didn't know Joel well, but I remember him as kind and funny, creative and wildly original, a sweet kid with the quiet confidence to be himself at all times, comfortable in his skin and his beloved bib overalls. His artwork was like a kaleidoscope into his unique imagination.
In my memories Joel is always wearing his signature white tee-shirt and those blue railroad bibs, baggy and dragging the ground as was the style of the day. One summer I ran into Joel and noticed he had cut the bibs off above the knees and wore them as shorts. Then September arrived and we met in school again. Forever true to himself, Joel had sewn the legs back on.
